Donkey is a 2010 Yamaha XT660R. While being a suitable match to ride for many thousands of kilometers, through some very tough terrain, a few changes had to be made to insure she survives the journey and is able to carry all of the gear.
In order to carry all the luggage that I would be taking with me. I fitted a pannier rack to the sides, as well as a top rack to attach my duffel bag and backpack. With 2 25L soft panniers from Mosko Moto and a 60L waterproof duffel bag from Ortlieb, I will have enough space for all my gear and baggage. My electronics (camera, phone, etc.) will be in my Tank bag, also Mosko Moto, so that I can easily remove them and carry them around as a backpack. This will come in handy if I want to stop somewhere and explore.
All other modifications were functional. This includes a proper skid plate under the motor to protect against stones as well as crash bars on the side. I can fix most things on the road, but if something happens to the motor, I'm gonna have to take a walk... or get a real donkey ;)
I also added some brighter LED auxiliary headlights in case I should ride in the dark. I've ridden in the bush in the dark... and I'll take all the light I can get thank you very much. Overall I tried to keep the amount of electronics on the bike to a minimum as it's a quick way to make life extremely complicated. So the only other electric attachment is a 12V charging port for charging my devices and operating the compressor.
I was going to install a larger 24L fuel tank to increase my range, unfortunately it could not be delivered in time before Donkey had to be shipped out. I guess I'll have to make due with the 15L that I have. If push comes to shove, I still have a 2L fuel can for longer stretches without a station.
Other than these few changes I have decided to leave Donkey pretty much unchanged. She will get some new tires when she arrives in Cape Town and maybe a service and some spa treatment to make sure she is in prime condition to set off to Namibia at the beginning of October.
