The journey has begun!!! The first days have brought us into Namibia. A little mishap on day one left Donkey with a broken pannier and me with a lightly sprained hand. Luckily John, an old client of my mom’s lives just up the road from the incident, in Citrusdal, and was able to help me repair the damaged pannier. Big thanks to him and Samuel for that. With everything back to full functionality, we were back on our way, staying at Kamieskroon before tackling our first border crossing of the trip. Off we headed, into the empty barrenness that is Namibia. The open space and lack of fences left an immediate impression. That, and the dry heat. This was all forgotten as we soaked in the amazing views. This country is already showing us how beautiful it can be, and we still have a very long way to go. I had some difficulties riding the dirt roads and Donkey is proving to be a bit skittish when it comes to the dirt. But I am slowly building confidence, learning how to keep in control even in dreaded washboard gravel. My only vice remains sand. I have not even mastered the basics there. But the journey has only just begun and there is still plenty of time to learn new skills.
